Street Armor

Boston street cleaning reminders

Never get a street-cleaning ticket in Boston again.

Snap the sign when you park. Street Armor reads it, works out which side of the street you are on, and reminds you the night before the sweeper comes. Free, no account, nothing leaves your phone.

How it works

  1. Photograph the sign

One photo when you park. The app reads "2ND & 4TH THURS 12PM-4PM" so you do not have to.

  2. It finds your side

Location, compass and house numbers tell odd from even. If it is not sure, it asks.

  3. Get reminded

A notification the evening before, holidays skipped, plus an optional calendar entry.

Questions

When is street cleaning season in Boston?

Most Boston streets are swept from April 1 to November 30. A smaller set of streets, including much of the North End and some downtown blocks, is swept year-round. Each street page here says which applies.

What does "2nd & 4th Thursday" mean?

It counts the weekday within the month. The 2nd Thursday is the second Thursday of that month, not the Thursday of the second week. Street Armor does this math for you.

How do I know if I am on the odd or even side?

Look at the house numbers on your side of the street. Street Armor works it out from your location and the direction you are facing when you photograph the sign, and asks you to confirm when it is not sure.

Is sweeping cancelled on holidays?

The city cancels sweeping on some holidays. Street Armor checks the City of Boston holiday list and skips those days, so it does not wake you up for a sweep that is not coming.

Does Street Armor cost anything?

No. Street Armor is free, with no ads, no account and no tracking. There is an optional tip jar if it saves you a ticket.

Where does the schedule data come from?

From the City of Boston "Street Sweeping Schedules" open dataset on Analyze Boston. The posted sign on your block is always the final word, which is why the app reads the sign itself.
